Asian hard, spiky hair still in fashion?

So I have short hair, 1"-2", and usually I wet my hair a little and use gel to hold it up and give it a sharper, spiky look. My coworker was ripping on how that hair is a 90s fashion and is looked down upon now; dude grew up in New York where fashion is an obsession. He said I should start using wax and give it a more natural look, but it doesn't really hold a shape with my short hair, just keeps it up. So is what this guy says is true, and all asians are moving towards that girly, longer j-pop look? Or can we still keep it porcupine spiky?
